the vynsane asylum

i found a good admin modification that lets you delete from a list of users, so i've deleted all the future spammers (those that signed up but haven't posted). i left those that have posted already, as it messes up the database if you delete a user and leave other data attached to them hanging, but they're deactivated anyway, so they shan't be a bother anymore.

i've also turned on the admin approval for registration, so that should take care of the spam-burgers.

you're telling me? all you had to do was read their posts and click on their incest porn links. i had to edit their posts to get rid of the links, and then find out a way to delete them!

oh, and the "admin approval" works both ways: any more "personalities" better be DAMN hilarious!

That's the first thing I thought of when you said admin approval. I think we'll be seeing less and less personalities around these parts.

And I wouldn't worry about "less personalities", just lots of real good ones.. the most recent couple of "actual" posters like Amy and Tycho are GREAT

i missed a couple of areas... and somehow they found them! i don't get it, but it's turned off now, and the posts were sent to the negative zone and edited appropriately.

why would they attack this board, as if it had any real clout? THAT'S what i don't get...

Perhaps they are the first wave of Romulan attackers, pissed that you guys rebuilt your Empire.

okay, so i found a small modification to the forum code that changes the parameters that are passed to the database when someone registers, so this will throw the spambots off, as they are expecting a certain parameter that won't be in use any longer... i've tested the registration process with the new code and registration still works, it just shouldn't work for spambots who are just trying to access the registration form directly as opposed to going through the actual registration process, thereby blocking the bots from registering - we'll see how it works, but if i go a week without seeing any spambots register, i will turn off admin approval.

well, apparently that didn't work, as there have been, like, three registrations of spammers since i did it...
