Thanks for the concern, Chux. Here's the scoop: Mrs. CS1138 and I are (were) expecting twins in late May/early June. She went in for her monthly exam/check-up on 2-23 and her doctor discovered that her membranes (one of the "waters") was "hour glassing". Picture blowing up a balloon into a beer bottle. Thats the amniotic sac and her cervix. Because of that and the fact that it's twins, they sent her to a hospital an hour away from where we live because they're THE place to be for high-risk pregnancies. The "hour glassing" isn't really a problem if you're further along, it's the fact that when she went into the hospital the twins were only at 24 weeks and 1 day. They were shooting my wife full of steroids to help with their lungs, but bleeding in the brain was the main concern and nothing preventative can be done about it (At 24 weeks, the odds of a brain bleed is about 85% and they can mean nothing, a minor learning disability, or severe cerebal palsy). The other thing that scared the shit outta me is the fact that 24 weeks is "viable", but at 23 weeks they don't even bother with recessitation if something's wrong.

As of Thursday, 3/2, the "hour glassing" has receeded (much to the surprise of the doctors). My wife has been moved from the "Oh shit!" part of the pregnacy wing to the "wait and see" part. The biggest thing is that she's gonna be in the hospital on 100% bedrest until the pregnancy's over, whether that means 3 more days or 3 more months. Both of us have family in Saginaw (where she's in the hospital), but I have school and work every day of the week and hour away in Mt. Pleasant. I want to be there with her the whole time, but both of us know that's not gonna/can't happen. So I drive an hour every nite to hang out with her for a while. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to make this about me. It's just that this is the part that I'm dealing with directly.

As of today, we're at 25 weeks and 5 days. Though the odds for survival and lack of any defects are better than they were when we got there, they're not in our favor. The doctors want her to go to at least 28 weeks, but would prefer 30. One of the biggest problems I'm having with this is that I'm somewhat of a control freak (I'm the guy that always insists on driving) and there's not a goddamn thing I can do about it.

So that's the scoop. Everyone's thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.

CS - scary shit, but keep the faith bro. Jodi's sister had both of her kids well before 30 weeks, and they're happy and healthy and perfectly normal today (the one is 7, the baby has just turned 1). Medicine is remarkable these days - what they can do for pre-terms babies is absolutely amazing. We'll keep up the dirty joking, you deal with what's important and keep us posted.

As for the situation at hand, she sees the high-risk specialist in the morning and because of work I can't be there. She's gonna call me as soon as she gets out, but I'm left to sit here an hour away sweating bullets. The good news is that tomorrow (Wednesday) begins week 26.
