Hooking Up AV Shit.....

Okay, so I'm getting me a new TV in the next week or so and I need some help.

I'd like to run an HD cable or satellite box into one of the HDMI inputs for video only, and use my old non-HDMI receiver to run the audio.

Question: If I use an HDMI cable to the tv and component audios to the receiver - will the HDMI audio signal still get to the tv speakers, or does it shut off? I guess if I have to turn the tv right down I'll do that.

Since HDMI carries both Audio and Video, both signals will be inputted into your television. I don't know of a way to turn the audio portion off, I don't even think it is possible. So what you will have to do is run the HDMI cable to the television and then I would run a digital optical cable or PCM digital coax cable out of the cable box or satellite receiver into your home theater receiver for the audio. If your home theater receiver does not have a digital audio input then you will just have to run composite (red / white) audio cables out of the cable/satellite box into your home theater receiver.

Then if you want to listen to the cable/satellite box through your home theater receiver you can just turn it to the appropriate input and let her rip, while having the volume on the TV turned completely off (if you wish). Or, if it is late at night, or if you don't want to disturb anyone, you can just turn the TV volume up and listen that way, not through the receiver.

This is exactly how my setup is, my Cox digital cable box w/ HDMI, home theater receiver, and 32" LCD HDTV w/ HDMI, and it works flawlessly.

If you have any other questions do ask, I know kh is nerdy when it comes to this shit too.

What UK said about the hook up is right. You can not turn the audio off in the HDMI outputs. the best option is to see if both outputs are active at the same time. If they are, then just use the composite(RCA) for audio on a regular input on the TV and the HDMI for the audio/video.

If only one output is hot(active) at once then you are fucked and can not do it unless you run the optical cable for the audio.

JJ, I myself was trying to figure this out, and fortunately the Cable guy was over and was able to pull it off. It CAN be done if you use a cable box. I don't know what company you have, but it is highly likely you could call them and they could walk you through it. You go ahead and hook the HDMI up from the box to the TV, then use the coax from the box to the receiver. You then go into a menu using the cabel box remote and select a certain audio option which will route the audio through the coax instead of the HDMI.
