I've no problem with race-bending if there's no definite reason a character has to be a particular ethnicity. It wouldn't make sense for Luke Cage to be white, for instance, but this could work. Michael Clarke Duncan was fucking perfect as Kingpin, and the only saving grace of that movie. (And, no, DB, I still haven't been able to work up the nerve to watch the director's cut.)

I watched the Director's Cut of DD and it didn't add all that much storywise. And I didn't notice the gratuitous sex scene was removed either so there ya go.

i'd be all for it - if it's not a direct translation of the comics akin to 'Sin City' and '300', why not? it's no more of a change than having MJ be the high school girlfriend and the one the goblin drops off a bridge and, instead of dying, lives to tell the tale (which all wouldn't be so bad except that they then introduce the girl who SHOULD have been dropped off the bridge two movies later...)

Oooh! Even better, instead of rebooting, do an adaptation of that story where the Punisher turned into a black dude, only substitute Spider-Man for the Punisher.

I dunno, somehow when I think of Spidey my mental image has to be a proper whitebread to be the right kind of "nerdy".
I am having a hard time figuring out how to explain it since left at just the preceding statement it sounds almost racist, when that is definitely not the case.
I guess just imagine if there was a reboot of Star Wars and Luke was played by a black guy it would be just "off", whereas somehow I can envision a black guy replacing Han (tho then you'd have to switch Lando out for a white guy and I kind of liked him the way he is)

I agree with Mabs - it just wouldn't feel right.
Kingpin worked because he was a criminal, and as we all know, all black guys are criminals.*
Another problem I have is the guy that wants to play Peter, Donald Glover. I haven't seen much of him on Community, but I did just see Mystery Team, where he did play the nerdy-type, but it was more for laughs.
Besides, when I think black nerd, I think Slicker Urkel.
*If you didn't read that as a joke, then fuck you.

Diablo, exactly what I meant. Star Wars is a peculiar example too, since the relations between the characters would necessitate changing other characters' ethnicities just to have it make sense.
And you hit about what I would have said too, that the "black nerd" characters that immediately come to mind are indeed Urkel and the guy from Fresh Prince. That's by no means saying that a different character-type couldn't be created, but I think it is more of an archetypal thing that is pretty much 100% media-created (or 100% fostered at the very least)

Well, seeing as it'd be a reboot with a black guy why not change his entire persona?! He could be a funky fly brutha that gets bit by the spider when he's knockin' the cobwebs off of a MILF.

I think you meant to say all criminals are black guys.

All liberals read it as a joke. All conservatives also secretly knew you were joking, but would plead ignorance so they can use it against you later on. And deep down, thats how they really feel, so it was funny because it's true.

Andrew Garfield is Spider-Man
Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have officially announced today that 26-year-old British actor Andrew Garfield (Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Social Network) has been cast as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in Marc Webb’s 3D Spider-Man reboot. Garfield beat out Jamie Bell; Josh Hutcherson; Alden Ehrenreich; Frank Dillane. Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson and Anton Yelchin (Terminator: Salvation, Star Trek) for the role. While Garfield might be one of the least known of the possible choices, he is probably the most talented actor on the short list.
On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Anybody have any thoughts on the costume redesign? I really didn't have any problems with them deviating from the "classic" design. If anything my issues with it stemmed from my "suspension of disbelief" that a lower middle class high school student would have access to materials to create a costume that looks like that.

I have more of a problem with him making the web-shooters.
