I have WAY too many DVDs
I'm organizing and cataloging my DVD collection for the first time. I've got way too fucking many. I may actually have to get rid of some. Not a hardship, or even a need for space, but sort of a "why the fuck do I have this movie" on a grand scale.
I just entered High Fidelity. That was number 273 in a roughly alphabetical listing. (There are some floating around in weird places still, which is why it's not entirely alphabetical.) That's not including multiple discs (especially in TV season sets).
Most are either of the "this stays out on a shelf" or "I want to keep this, but don't need it out on display" variety. And some of the "I probably wouldn't buy this now, but I like the movie, so no point in getting rid of it" variety. But there are some that, eh, I dunno. Like movies we got when Wal-Mart first started doing their $5.50 thing, and it still seemed special. Or movies that were in two-packs. Or of the "that's not much more than a rental, and we'll probably like it" blind buys. There are a couple that I'd seen most of the movie and liked it, bought the DVD, and found out the entire thing fell completely apart in the last half-hour I'd not seen. (Conspiracy Theory jumps immediately to mind there.)
And there are a few double-dips where I have to (or, I guess, want to) keep both. Like X-Men and X-Men 1.5, which have different extras. Or the Lord of the Rings long/"less long" versions. Or Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where I can't get rid of the old DVD no matter how much the video and sound quality suck ass, simply because the fucknuts inserted 24 seconds of previously unseen material (that should remain unseen) into the fucking Castle Anthrax sequence of the Special Edition, horribly throwing off the flow of one of the most classic comedy bits ever, but didn't see the need to include the untampered-with version on this otherwise jam-packed set.
I've thankfully cut out blind DVD buys unless I'm entirely sure I'll like the movie. Like Sweeney Todd or The Simpsons. And I'm being a lot more selective about what I get.
Sad thing is, I've actually noticed a few I would like to upgrade. Like The Blues Brothers, where the newer DVD contains deleted scenes. Ah, I should wait.

Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
I burned about 300 DVDs from my collection over the last couple years and sold the DVDs, I had way too many and still do. I keep some of the more significant favorites as "real" DVDs but I SIGNIFICANTLY cut down on my collecting...I got the new Diary of the Dead for my bday since I collect the Romero Zombie flicks and I got the new Rambo but other than that, I think the last DVD I bought was Sopranos season 7 and Deadwood season 3.
I honestly don't know what the next DVD will be that I buy but it won't be for awhile, that's for sure.
Not enough time to watch everything anyway, not enough money either, so I need to be very selective.

Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
I hear that. I'm getting to the point that I'm running out of room to store my DVDs.
I have quite a few I've yet to watch; some of which I've had for a few years now.
Many were great deals on good/decent movies or movies I wanted to see, but never got a chance to.

Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
I won't even disclose how many DVDs I own.
Good news is; I've severely cut back on buying them within the past year, especially since I've kinda made the transition to the HD format (Blu-ray, and HD-DVD (as it once was)).
But yeah, I've got a shitload of DVDs. Last I counted, 170+ were still sealed, so I've got a bunch of movies that I have never seen; and not necessarily the ones that have never been opened, but those that are opened as well. Of course some of the movies that are still sealed I've seen one way or the other (TV, DVD, Theater, etc.). I've also got a bunch of TV shows/sets that I've never watched as well.
My DVD collection is/was getting out of control but most all of them were purchased on sale, or I got a really good deal on them through other ways. I have 50+ HD DVDs and the average price on those were like $1.50 each (yeah, I know, insanely cheap(I've got my tricks)). So I haven't put in nearly as much money into my DVD collection compared to what it is valued at.
I also have some movies that are duplicate titles (not releases/versions). Like The Evil Dead Book of the Dead version and the new Ultimate Edition, A Nightmare on Elm Street box set version and the newer Infinifilm version, new/old Phatasm versions, Re-Animator, Texas Chainsaw Pioneer meat pack and new 2 disc Ultimate Edition Steelbook, and the list goes on and on. Most of the dupes are of Horror movies (which you all probably know is my favorite genre) that I love and the discs feature different extras, transfers, packaging, and what not. I don't have many non-horror DVDs that are dupes, actually, I can't think of one.
I also own some DVDs on HD or Blu-ray, but also still have the original standard def. DVD releases as well, mainly because of special features/extras and limited edition/exclusiveness. Knocked Up HD and regular UR 2 disc, because of extras, and The Big Lebowski HD vs. The Achiever Edition because of contents/pack ins/packaging and etc., for example. I have other examples but you probably get the idea.
Anyways, I use DVD Profiler to catalog and track my DVDs, great program, very happy with it.

"Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."
Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
Man, between getting rid of toys and now DVDs, it sounds like you are getting to the point I was at where I just felt like I would be better off without so much stuff. I swear, I had a room filled with modern Star Wars, my childhood toys, comics from when I was a kid, etc. It was kinda like keeping a museum to oneself- the pinnacle of narcissism. I just decided to dump most of it. It felt like you might imagine, liberating.anarky wrote:I'm organizing and cataloging my DVD collection for the first time. I've got way too fucking many. I used to have about 100 DVDs, but since Netflix and DVR came out, I decided to sell about half since I never watched them. I may sell more. I only pick up the occasional disc now. I'm back up to about 60, and I only bought about 4-5 last year altogether- Caligula, Flash Gordon, Suspiria, Casino Royale, and maybe one other.
Really, with three at a time Netflix and the number of movies that come out yearly now, there isn't much of a reason to buy anymore, other than "I like it and want a souvenir on the shelf." As I get older, I think I'm shedding that mindset. Most of what I kept are things I enjoyed as a kid, or that I want to watch all the time. It doesn't even have to be good- like "Beastmaster" for instance.
KISS MY ASS! kISS MY ASS! I'M THE BIGGEST HATER!!!
Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
With me, it's not the regular movie DVDs that take up all the space. It's the television show DVD sets like "The Simpsons" and "South Park" (up to 10 seasons each) that are taking up all the room.
As far as movies go, I only buy new releases now, for the most part. In fact I think the last DVD I bought was "Walk Hard", and that was almost two months ago. It saves space, but it doesn't do me much good in the fall, when all the summer movies that I liked get released on DVD.

Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
I find good deals on movies hard to pass up. Who the hell is going to rent anything when you can buy a previously viewed copy for just a buck more??? I too must have about 100 DVDs I've never even watched.

Also, buying a new DVD costs just as much as it does for two to go to the theater, except you can watch the flick over and over at your leisure.jjreason wrote:I find good deals on movies hard to pass up. Around here, a new DVD (on sale the first week, at least) costs only about $2-$5 more than one ticket to a theater. And you don't have to get a babysitter, drive half an hour, and deal with stupid teenyboppers who can't fucking turn their phones off.

Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
I've managed to keep my DVD collection under control, but I'm not quite as into movies as some of you guys. Plus, I'm cheap and really good at procrastinating. I just got the Indiana Jones series a few weeks ago and I've wanted them since they came out. There are a bunch of Monty Python TV series and some movies DVDs I've wanted also but just haven't got around to buying them yet.
I was just going to start a thread aobut The Evil Dead, but saw this post. Walmart has Evil Dead (and maybe the other two...I didn't stop to check) for $7.50. I'm pretty sure I've seen all 3 at some point, but it has been a while or they were on TV and edited. Which version should I buy?UKWildcat wrote: I also have some movies that are duplicate titles (not releases/versions). Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
I'd like to know the answer to that as well. The bazillion different versions are the reason I've still not seen any of these.

Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
For The Evil Dead I would buy the newest Ultimate Edition. http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct ... d=23443573
This set has 3 discs, Disc one contains an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Disc Two contains a full frame transfer (which is how this film was originally shot), and disc 3 is stuffed with extra features, some new, some old. There are also features on the first 2 discs as well. But to have the best video transfers out there, and in both the original aspect ratio, and a widescreen ratio, and good audio tracks, this set should not disappoint.
Here is a good review at DVDTalk that lays out this edition: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/31952/evil-dead-the/
As for Evil Dead II, you can get the THX version which is pretty good. http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct ... Id=5735756
If you want cooler packaging and almost identical extras, for a price, you can get: http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct ... Id=5736177
There is also The Evil Dead book of the dead edition, which is cool, but the Ultimate Edition is better in the way of material and extras. I have both though, as I mentioned before. Both of the dead books look pretty sweet displayed on my horror shelf, a link to the combo pack (the packaging alone makes these sets an A):
http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct ... Id=5736269
For Army of Darkness, the best version to date is, in my opinion, the 2 disc Boomstick Edition:
http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.a ... hID=254992
But sadly, it is out of print.
All of the other releases are out of print, except for one, so you don't have much of a choice really (unless you want to go the eBay route, then get the Boomstick Edition):

Re: I have WAY too many DVDs
So, possibly a sign of maturity, I pre-ordered every new DVD I'm aware of that I'll want before October yesterday. (With gas expected to hit $5 per gallon soon, and no end to the price spike in sight, I'll let someone else bring everything to me, thanks.)
Pushing Daisies: Season One
Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs
Batman: Gotham Knight
Freakazoid: Season One
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2002 series): Volume Three
Those all fall under "can't live without these."
I also had Go Lion in the mix, which is the original series Voltron was based on, only dubbed into English. However, they announced Volume II today, which means the first is actually Volume I, and not the entire series. I can't afford to get five or six volumes. Okay, I could if I wanted to, but I doubt I have the interest in an entire series that's as long as the American version but has different names, more violence, and a couple of graveside scenes. So I cancelled it.
As an aside, if Rollo is reading this and has not vanished into thin air lately, congratulations to you and your co-workers. Pushing Daisies is one of only four recent shows I saw the need to get on DVD (the others being Deadwood, Arrested Development, and Curb Your Enthusiasm). Good company indeed.

I just finished typing up an inventory of my DVDs...it took me over 2 hours.
I'd count and see how many that is, but I'm fucking tired now.
