Favorites of 2007?
With only 2-3 weeks left in 2007, it's time to look back.
What were your favorites and least favorites?
I wrote a blog (egads!) about it on my myspace.
The Best/My Favorites:
1. Superbad - Every year (or two) there comes a movie that will be quoted by so many people so often that it gets really annoying really quickly (take Napoleon Dynamite and Anchorman for example). Endlessly rewatchable and hilarious. There isn't much that can be said about this movie that hasn't already been said elsewhere.
2. 300 - Another Frank Miller masterpiece perfectly brought to life. Like Sin City before it, 300 is a shot for shot recreation. The production of this one really flew under my radar until I started seeing commercials for it. The violence was over-the-top, excessively bloody, and hell of a lot of fun.
3. The Bourne Ultimatum - In a summer of threequels, this is the only one that succeeded in surpassing the previous two installments. And surpass it it did - by miles. Easily one of the best action movie series ever. Even though they'll probably drive big trucks of cash to Matt Damon's house for Bourne 4, they really don't need to as this is a very well-done, satisfying conclusion to the story.
4. Knocked Up - Judd Apatow delivers* his second great comedy of the year. After his memorable performance in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Seth Rogen's star exploded with Knocked Up. Just look to Rogen's writing/acting in Superbad for further evidence of his great comedic talents. Can't wait to see Rogen in Kevin Smith's Zach And Miri Make A Porno.
* Ugh, terrible pun not intended.
5. Live Free or Die Hard - Yippie Ki Yay! John McClane is back - well, sorta. If you saw Live Free or Die Hard in theaters you probably missed all the standard Die Hard F-bombs (which are thankfully abundant in the "Unrated" DVD), but hopefully were also entertained by the insanely over-the-top action scenes. And Kevin Smith totally steals his scenes.
6. The Simpsons Movie - I think they saved up all the funny from the last 10 years (or so) of The Simpsons and stuck it in the movie.
7. Gone Baby Gone - The Afflecks deliver an amazingly directed (Ben) and acted (Casey) movie. And Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris are great in almost everything they do.
8. Spider-Man 3 - You have to take the good with the bad with this one. For all it's missteps (too much story crammed in, emo Peter, and the Jazz club scene *shudder*) Spider-man 3 was still a very fun ride.
9. Sicko - Love him or hate him Michael Moore's latest feels far less one sided than his previous efforts, Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11. Sicko moves you, makes you laugh, and pisses you off all at the same time.
10. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - A definite step up from Dead Man's Chest and an ending that wraps up a bit too nicely for my tastes (and obviously sets up a possible Pirates 4), but At World's End is much like Spider-Man 3 - a fun ride.
Honorable Mention:
Zodiac - Despite the rave reviews, I expected little from this, but was quickly drawn into Zodiac. Jake Gyllenhaal continues to impress me.
The Rest:
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - I'm one of the few that liked the first Fantastic Four. It was a lot of fun. The sequel was no exception...despite the horrible Galactus.
Shooter - Mark Wahlberg takes what looked like a lame by the numbers action movie and makes it suprisingly good.
Mr. Bean's Holiday - Far, far better than the piece of garbage that was 1997's Bean, Rowan Atkinson retirns his childlike character to greatness (and not a recycled gag in sight!).
TMNT - The best Ninja Turtles movie since the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the best cartoon since the original. CGI was a nice step for the franchise.
Blades of Glory - Will Ferrell returns to form after the crap factory that was Talladega Nights.
Grindhouse - Planet Terror - great fun. Death Proof - only the last 15 minutes are fun. The trailers were worth the price of admission alone.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters - The show that defines ADHD TV goes on for 90 minutes. As great as the show is, 90 minutes is a bit too long.
Fracture - Ryan Gosling keeps giving great performance after great performance. That Anthony Hopkins guy ain't too bad either.
Catch and Release - Totally boring predictable chick flick saved only by Kevin Smith.
Hannibal Rising - Even though it bombed, I thought this was a great new take on the Hannibal Lecter story and did a great job at making a sadistic killer sympathetic. I felt that it could have used an Anthony Hopkins cameo though.
Breach - Ryan Phillippe shines again in a great thiller that has little to no action scenes.
The Worst:
Ghost Rider - Well, at least I got to see Nicolas Cage's head burst into flames.
Reno 911!: Miami - How can such a hilarious tv show fail so miserabley on the big screen?
Vacancy - I'd say something about this movie, but I really can't remember much of it, so it must've been pretty bad.
Transformers - I went into this movie with zero expectations and was still let down big time. All the "Transformers" looked the same (except Optimus and Bumblebee - they were red and yellow!), the action scenes were a sloppy, blurry mess and every character was mentally retarded.

Re: Favorites of 2007?
All I've seen from this year:
1) TMNT
2) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
9,842) Transformers
Sicko, Pirates 3, Spidey 3, 300, Simpsons, Stardust, No Country for Old Men, and Superbad are on my list. The first four I hope to see within the next week or so.

I'm going to post a more thorough list on the other site, but as of right now:
Best:
1.) Superbad
2.) American Gangster
3.) Knocked Up
4.) Grindhouse
5.) Spider-Man 3
6.) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
7.) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
8.) Transformers
9.) Ratatouille
10.) The Simpsons Movie
11.) 300 (wanted to include it)
By the way, "Sweeney Todd" has a possibility of claiming the #1 spot. "Walk Hard" has a good chance of making the list, too.
I'm sure a lot of you guys would change your mind about "Transformers" being the worst movie of the year if you had seen any of these:
Worst:
1.) Norbit
2.) Epic Movie
3.) Hostel Part II
4.) Evan Almighty
5.) Ghost Rider

No, we're not stupid enough to watch obviously bad shit like Norbit and Epic Movie. I don't even think the orange Rollo Tomassi is that dumb.

Re: Favorites of 2007?
I saw Ghost Rider. It was Oscar worthy compared to "Transformers" (and my Nicolas Cage hatred is well documented).Double_G wrote:I'm sure a lot of you guys would change your mind about "Transformers" being the worst movie of the year if you had seen any of these:

I'd rather watch all 4 of those in a single sitting marathon (with no pee breaks) rather than watch "Transformers" again.

Re: Favorites of 2007?
Sicko is the best movie. Ever. Well, until Fahrenheit 911 Part 2 comes out!
Shame on you, George W. Bush. Shame on you!
Re: Favorites of 2007?
I didn't pay to see any of the movies on my list except for a few that were on my "best" list since my friend works at a movie theater and hooks me up with free tickets. I wouldn't actually pay to see crap like that. I went to Epic Movie because all of my friends wanted to go and I went to Norbit because I thought there was a chance that Eddie Murphy would be funny again. I was wrong. Horribly wrong.anarky wrote:No, we're not stupid enough to watch obviously bad shit like Norbit and Epic Movie. I don't even think the orange Rollo Tomassi is that dumb.
I don't know. Out of all the Will Smith movies I've seen, I've only enjoyed two of them: "Independence Day" and "Men in Black". And before you ask, no, I haven't seen "Pursuit of Happyness".vynsane wrote:i am legend should be on your short-list of contenders as well.
Let's just say that the only reason I'm really looking forward to "I Am Legend" is for "The Dark Knight" preview.

I've said it before: Eddie Murphy has simply lost the ability to be funny when he's not pretending to be a cartoon ass. Even his cartoon dragons aren't especially amusing.

Revision #1:
1) Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End
2) TMNT
3) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
4) Shrek the Third
9,844) Transformers
I saw Let's Go to Prison and thought initially that would rank, but it's older than I thought (2006).

Re: Favorites of 2007?
Nobody said anything about Shoot 'Em Up? Man, I loved that movie. It was really cheesy, but entertaining. And it had my man Clive Owen in it. Anything Clive Owen is in is gold. I want to be dickslapped by Clive Owen on various parts of my body.
Halloween was good, the one that Rob Zombie directed.
And I really enjoyed 30 Days Of Night, but the ending was lame. But it was definitely worth it.
American Gangster was pretty fucking good.
And 300 was so fucking excellent. I felt bad cause I think I damaged the seat that I was in from my raging lady humidity. I should have brought some newspaper or something to sit on.
I remember seeing Evan Almighty, and that movie sucked major balls. It was the kind of movie that sucks so bad, that just talking about it starts a fight. I remember after seeing that movie, I was in the parking lot with my friends, smoking and talking about the movie. And I think it was Deoxyribonucleic who said, "I don't know, I kind of liked that movie." And I got so mad at her and I said, "You take that back this instant. That movie was horrible, just horrible. Y'know what, don't talk to me for the rest of the night."
And that movie War with Jason Statham was kinda lame. I could have gone without seeing it. It wasn't horrible, but I don't think I'll want to see it again.
And Hills Have Eyes 2 was probably the biggest disappointment of the year. First off, the image on the movie posters for HHE2 never even happened in the movie. On the movie posters, there is this image of a person being dragged through the desert in a parachute by a mutant. And that never happened in the movie. Nothing even close to that image happened in the movie. If you haven't seen Hills Have Eyes 2 yet, I recommend that you don't. I hate this movie so much, that I am even going to take the liberty and ruin the movie for you.
Here's the long ass url of my myspace blog where I wrote about HHE2 cause I don't feel like entering the code for embedding the link:
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea ... ED12756548
And I just saw the Coen brothers' No Country For Old Men. And I wasn't impressed. And I love the Coen brothers, to the point that I have a Big Lebowski tattoo. I enjoyed the cinematography in No Country, but I didn't care too much for the story. Tommy Lee Jones is fine piece of ass, but I still didn't really enjoy the movie. The movie wasn't horrible or anything. I didn't storm out of the theater demanding my money back. I just expected more from the Coens. If I were to grade it, I would give it a straight C. Or maybe a C+ cause Tommy Lee is in it.
